Collection: MLH Tugtupit jewelry - Fluorescent Greenlandic gemstone
Tug-of-war
Tugtupite is Greenland's most popular gemstone and is unofficially considered the national stone.
Tugtupite is one of the rare minerals. It is found only in Narsaq in Greenland, on the Kola Peninsula in Siberia and Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec in Canada. Only Tugtupite from the Greenland deposit is strongly colored.
The reddish color is enhanced by UV radiation (sunlight), which in turn fades when stored in the dark. Under UV lamp, Tugtupit is salmon-colored.
The name of the stone comes from the legend, which tells that the girl Tuttu (reindeer) gave birth in secret in the mountains, and where the afterbirth and blood fell, Tugtupit was born.
